Wireless Mouse Software Update is the official Apple Magic Mouse software and allows you to take advantage of the multi-touch features of your Magic Mouse. Without it, your mouse will be sorely lacking in full functionality. Note that you will need Snow Leopard Mac OS X v10.6.1 before installing this update although we've also provided Leopard users with a version too.

The Magic Mouse has been shipping with Apple's new iMacs, which presumably already carry the update in order to allow the mouse to function out of the box. The standalone mouse, however, has yet to arrive in retail stores or begin shipping from the company's online stores, although Apple indicated that it would become available at the end of October and is currently listed as shipping in 5-7 business days in Apple's U.S. online store.
The Magic Mouse user guide notes that either the mouse software update or Mac OS X 10.6.2 is required for full Magic Mouse functionality, suggesting that Apple has been planning for a release of OS X 10.6.2 around the time the Magic Mouse becomes available. Users who purchase a Magic Mouse after upgrading to OS X 10.6.2 when it becomes available will not be required to install the separate mouse software update.
Apple released software updates that enable Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard and Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard to take advantage of the new Magic Mouse in all its glory. It had been thought that the device would be dependent on Mac OS X 10.6.2, but today's updates mean that users can buy and use the Magic Mouse with current versions of both operating systems as soon as it is available as a standalone purchase.
Apple's new mouse works with both hardware and software to sense finger position, gestures with fingers, momentum of movements, and more. According to the Magic Mouse manual, the hardware will require Mac OS X 10.6.2 or later. Those on Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later can install the Wireless Mouse Software update 1.0 to obtain the same features.
The same Multi-Touch technology first introduced on the revolutionary iPhone comes to the mouse. It's called Magic Mouse, and it's the world's first Multi-Touch mouse. Click anywhere, scroll in any direction, and swipe through images on its smooth, seamless top shell. It works wirelessly using Bluetooth, so you don't have to worry about cables or adapters cluttering your workspace. And built-in software lets you configure Magic Mouse any way you want.

October 22, 2019: We like to remind users who store archived copies of older Apple installers for Mac OS X, OS X, or macOS, or copies of older Apple software update packages (pkg bundles or DMG files containing pkg bundles) that this software will expire on October 24, 2019, 5:29:17 p.m. UTC. This includes recovery systems that have been created as "macOS Installer Media" on pen drives. Depending on situation, the software will still work if you modify the date setting on your Mac, or if you confirm to the Apple installer that you are prepared to install software with outdated security certificates.
Such second iMac had a problem of freezing-crashing from time to time, which I suspected was due to the wireless keyboard or most likely the wireless mouse from Apple, since it was fixed replacing them with wired ones from Apple. Curiously, the problem has also been fixed even using the wireless devices after installing all macOS Big Sur public beta versions, release candidates and final release in the external booting SSD. My conclusion is that the firmware update fixed the freezing-crash.

Mac OS (originally System Software; retronym: Classic Mac OS[a]) is the series of operating systems developed for the Macintosh family of personal computers by Apple Computer from 1984 to 2001, starting with System 1 and ending with Mac OS 9. The Macintosh operating system is credited with having popularized the graphical user interface concept.[4] It was included with every Macintosh that was sold during the era in which it was developed, and many updates to the system software were done in conjunction with the introduction of new Macintosh systems.
Towards the end of 1987, Apple introduced a package titled "Apple Macintosh System Software Update 5.0".[22] For the first time, the Macintosh operating system was offered as a distinct retail product that included four 800K disks and three manuals, at a cost of US$49. The software itself was still freely available through user groups and bulletin board services. While the product box presented this update to the operating system as "version 5.0", this number does not appear in the software itself. Three of the four disks (System Tools 1, System Tools 2 and Utilities 1) are all bootable, and the user can boot off whichever floppy contain the tools the user needs. For instance, System Tools 2 is the only disk with printer drivers, and Utilities 1 is the only disk with Disk First Aid and Apple HD SC Setup. Because the disks are named System Tools, users and the press commonly referred to this version as "System Tools 5.0".
System Software 6 (also referred to as "System 6") is a consolidation release of the Macintosh system software, producing a complete, stable, and long-lasting operating system. Two major hardware introductions requiring additional support under System 6 are the 68030 processor and 1.44 MB SuperDrive debuting with the Macintosh IIx and Macintosh SE/30. Later updates include support for the first specialized laptop features with the introduction of the Macintosh Portable. From System 6 forward, the Finder has a unified version number closely matching that of the System, alleviating much of the confusion caused by the often considerable differences between earlier Systems.[25]
Mac OS 9 added improved support for AirPort wireless networking. It introduced an early implementation of multi-user support. Though not a true multi-user operating system, Mac OS 9 does allow multiple desktop users to have their own data and system settings. An improved Sherlock search engine added several new search plug-ins. Mac OS 9 also provides a much improved memory implementation and management. AppleScript was improved to allow TCP/IP and networking control. Mac OS 9 also makes the first use of the centralized Apple Software Update to find and install OS and hardware updates.

Thanks for the input! You guys got me thinking, I have my laptop setup with 2 partitions, I use the work partition all the time and I use the maintenance partition for running disk utilities and such on the work partition. The maintenance partition only has the default and software updated 10.6.8 with some additional maintenance utilities installed. So I booted to the maintenance partition, installed IDE Arduino 1.0.3, plugged in the Uno board and viola, the new Network device Detected dialog popped up. I uploaded some tests and the Uno works fine & dandy. But all my stuff is on my work partition so this setup would suck. I rebooted back to the work partition, as per your suggestion checked the console messages after plugging in the board:
If the Bluetooth utility does not detect the Bluetooth mouse, check the bottom of the mouse or inside the battery compartment for a small button. If found, press the button, as the computer may require the mouse to be discoverable. If no button is found and the mouse comes with a software installation disc, install the mouse software on the computer. After installing, check the Bluetooth utility to see if it detects the Bluetooth mouse. 2ff7e9595c
